Lanugage Arts

In Reading, our class has begun reading Mr. Popper’s Penguins. We will be reading this book for the next several weeks. In class, we will read the story together and answer a few study guide questions for each chapter. The children should keep their study guides in their travel folders to review at home and to continue in class the next day. The students will have 4 tests while we read the book. The tests will be over Chapter 1-5, Chapters 6-10, Chapters 11-15, and Chapters 16-20.
NO SPELLING WORDS NEXT WEEK!

Math

In Math we will begin to study multiplying 2 digits by 1 digit and looking for patterns in the numbers to help us. For example, the children know the basic fact 2 x 5 = 10. We will use this fact to find 20 x 5 = 100 and 200 x 5 = 1, 000.

Science

Next week the students will learn about various reptiles by matching a description of a reptile to a picture in the classroom. We will also watch the movie, Reptiles, by Eyewitness.

Social Studies

The students will learn some slang language in Australia and write a pretend letter home using some of the new words they learn. We will also study the Great Barrier Reef and animals of Australia. On Thursday they will create a physical map of Australia using salt dough. This will need several days to dry before we can decorate it!

         Religion

We will continue to practice the new Apostles Creed. The children taped the new Creed in their books and also put a paper copy in their travel folders to practice at home as they have time.

A Few Notes…

·        If you wish to print off multiplication practice tests for your child, the website is www.math-drills.com [2]. They have practice worksheets for all math areas and different levels if you wish to review skills or challenge your child!

·        Our field trip is on Friday. The children will be IN UNIFORM and should pack their lunch. They should also bring a snack to eat before we leave school since lunch will be much later that afternoon. We will be riding the bus for this field trip!

·        If all goes as planned, my maternity leave will be from Monday, March 5-Friday, May 11. My long term substitute will be Miss Erica Lehnig, who subbed for Mr. Cranford while he was out. She and I have met several times to review the curriculum and classroom procedures, and will continue to meet until I leave. I feel confident she will do a great job with the children and they will have a smooth transition with her!
